The Codependency Model

Posted on September 18, 2018

The typical way to treat codependency is to first examine the family member or partner of the individual with codependency. However, this also means that important aspects such as the nature of the relationship, sense of attachment and the bond between the two, are neglected.

There are many different takes and perceptions of codependency and how it should be treated. the original perception and diagnosis of it has been tweaked and evolved such that many different types of treatment methods were created to tackle different aspects of the individual with codependency or interactions associated with the individual. Family members and other loved ones who are related to the individual with codependency, are also said to be codependent.

Codependency questions family members’ and partners’ drive and ways they show care and concern. Sometimes they might not be expressing their love and care properly and instead come off as cold and reluctant. It prompts them to recall and look back at past experiences for better alternatives to resolve the issues happening now. Codependence makes one feel ashamed, as though one was being criticized or blamed, hence causing one to leave the relationship without even seeking help.

Hence a more effective codependency treatment was created to support partners and family members of the individual with codependency. It is a model that focuses on the attachment aspect and recognizes the partner and family members’ efforts to help their loved one’s codependency. This model is called Prodependence. Regardless of a partner or loved one’s behavior and attitude, prodependence frames their behavior in a positive light as stemming from attachment and love.

It might be difficult to live with someone with codependency, but there are ways to relief the trauma and dysfunction felt from the relationships and experiences. Families and loved ones now do not have to be reminded of the sadness and confusion they have experienced in the past and can instead go through a less uneasy form of therapy.

Prodependence highly recommends and uses similar basic therapy practices as codependency, a refreshing and whole new focus on self-love, creating healthier restrictions and improving one’s interactions and responses to an individual with codependency. Prodependence not only does not cause self-doubt, but also acknowledges the love they have for their partners.
