It has been found that practicing yoga and deep breathing classes twice a week can help treat depression. This method can serve to be a viable alternative to medication or even supplement the prescription.

The type of yoga used in the study is a form of Hatha yoga and it focuses on precision in the postures and control of breathing. The study highlights the use of yoga and breathing intervention as a viable treatment to major depressive disorder in people who are not on antidepressants or those who did not manage to reduce their depressed symptoms via the medication.

Moreover, another study on yogic breathing also showed similar results. Controlled yogic breathing indeed does help to reduce severe depression in people who did not respond to antidepressant medication. Such breathing technique involves rhythmic breathing exercises that aims to induce calmness in people, bringing them into a meditative state.
