Emotional stability, optimism, control, conscientiousness and determination are the five life skills critical to success in life. It has been found that regardless of age or gender, people benefit from having these life skills. They were found to have lower depression rates, greater financial stability, improved health and lower social isolation.

Professor Andrew Steptoe, who co-led the research explained that these five life skills will all contribute to success in life and no single attribute is more essential than the others. People with the lowest level of these five life skills had depression rates of 23% whereas people with the highest level of these life skills noticed a drop in their depression rates to 3%.

Moreover, what is surprising to note is that having these skills positively affects diverse areas of our well-being – such as in the economic, social, psychological, biological and health and disability related domains.

With that being said, these skills are definitely critical to an increase in our well-being even as we grow older. It is hence essential for us to not only have one or two of the skills but develop and maintain all five skills, as this will eventually lead us to a happier and healthier life.
