How a bad economy affects our mental health at work

Researchers are also now beginning to understand the psychological nature and consequences of recessions.

The longer one is unemployed, the worse the effects. Recent studies suggest even more pervasive effects. For example, a large-scale study in Germany shows that one to four years of unemployment has negative effects on personality – a trend that was not reversed with re-employment.

That feeling of uncertainty, and the loss of control over those issues that are most important to us, are two of the most destructive psychological stressors.

The negative effects of a recession do not stop at employees – research has shown a trickle-down effect to other family members.

Even as budgets shrink because of the recession, we need to pay more attention to the mental-health needs of all those in organizations.
