Mindfulness is based on an ancient buddhist practice similar to meditation that means paying attention to things in a certain way - purposefully, in the present moment and non-judgmentally.

Recent research was conducted to investigate how practicing mindfulness differed between emotions, specifically, positively and negatively weighted thoughts.

Interestingly, findings showed that mindfulness did not uniquely relate to emphasis on positive thoughts. In fact, mindfulness affected negative thoughts as well.

It was found that mindfulness may attenuate emphasis on negative thoughts and that mindfulness meditation was able to reduce cognitive emphasis on negativity which contributes to distress and dysfunction.
