Is your child's ADHD actually autism?

The symptoms of ADHD may 'overshadow' or 'mask' those of autism in young children, experts have warned.

It has been found that:

•Autism diagnosis is delayed by 3 years in children diagnosed with ADHD

•Children diagnosed with ADHD first were 30 times more likely to receive their autism disorder after the age of six, than those with just autism

•Healthcare workers may not be aware symptoms of both disorders overlap

The symptoms of autism in young children, including trouble with social communication and repetitive behaviours may not manifest themselves during routine visits to check if a child is developing properly.

In such cases, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in a child with ASD may predispose a clinician to diagnose ADHD,' Dr Miodovnik said.

Dr Miodovnik recommends certain ways to prevent misdiagnosis.
