We worry about all sorts of things: money, work, family… We are stress over all sorts of events.

In a study by Emma Bruehlman-Senecal and Ozlem Ayduk which is published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the focus was on people’s ability to travel mentally through time. They suggest that thinking about the distant future could relieve the stress that individuals have in the short-term. Although short-term situations might cause immense stress, it will not result in long-term consequences.
Participants who focuses on their future in a year’s time experienced less stress and negativity than those who focused in a week time or those in the control group. It helps individual to think that the event have a less permanent impact on their lives than thinking about the near future.

These results suggest that thinking about the future helps to give you perspective on the negative events in your life. Instead of obsessing over the details of what went wrong, which does not help to get work done, it would be better to focus on future. Thus, it is essential to recognise that most events in our life might seem important at one point of time, do not have a life-changing impact.
