Suicides up in Singapore

The number of attempted suicides increased from 1009 in 2011 to 1090 in 2012. This is an increase from 19.5 to 20.5 per 100,000 people.

THe number of deaths from suicide rose from 8.1 per 100,000 people in 2011 to 10.3 in 2012.

Relationship problems were associated with one-third of all suicides while employment issues accounted for another one-third.

The Health Promotion Board has a programme which trains selected tertiary students on mental health issues, including suicide prevention, to help fellow students in need.
