Online Dating Scams

Published on April 21, 2022

Have you been recently targeted by an online dating scam? Has somebody been telling you they love you and asked you to send them money? Have you developed a total chatting relationship with somebody through online, without ever meeting them, but are convinced that you are in love with them? Has this new person been asking you to invest in Bitcoin or other stock options and to trust them? Are you in a place of overwhelm through the last two years of the pandemic? Have you felt isolated and lonely? Have you felt like you have lost your way?

online dating scams

The pandemic has revealed a lot of people struggling with mental health issues and has resulted in isolation and loneliness and in inability to socialize in normal and healthy meaningful ways. As such, people who are vulnerable to loneliness, depression, anxiety, have struggled even more in this pandemic and are a very vulnerable population to scams and other con-artists.

These con-artists and scammers use very sophisticated mental health and psychological tactics to seduce their targeted victims. One of the things that makes people susceptible or vulnerable is when they think they are too smart and think that they cannot ever be targeted. Most of the people who have fallen victims to the banking or dating scams are actually very educated, wealthy individuals. Their problem is their lack of self-awareness at their own vulnerabilities and susceptibility to loneliness, isolation, longing for human companionship or their willingness to help another human being. These things in combination with somebody who is willing to play a long game and play on people's fears of loneliness and desire for connection, can be maniplulated.

All in the Family Counselling Centre helps people to deal with this by helping them learn about healthy boundaries, how to process their feelings and how to have better ways to actually recognize who is a good person and who is a bad person.

People who are really susceptible to be conned are ones who don't have a healthy respect and understanding of their own feelings. Our feelings are on our side and are often telling us, from our unconscious, when something is not good for us, but unfortunately, many people have not learned how to process their feelings and instead dismiss their feelings and operate on logic – actually making them very vulnerable to scammers and other con-games.
