Old coping skills are gone: get new ones

Published on April 28, 2020

Are you struggling with how to cope in a situation where your old coping skills are gone? Did your old coping skills often involve socialization, going out, drinking in groups? Are you finding it hard to find new ways to soothe yourself or deal with stress and anxiety now that you are in quarantine? How are you able to cope with the stress from work and family now that your ability to get out, exercise, meet up with friends has been greatly reduced or changed?

There is a general lethargy descending upon people now that the reality of our old, pre-Covid19 world has gone. The new reality of a life with a highly contagious virus will change forever how we interact and socialize. Human beings are huge social creatures, and a main source of comfort and coping is for people to get together with other people, whether that is through conversations, lunches, drinking, dating or hanging out in groups. Days of being able to do that freely and without thinking are changed permanently for the foreseeable future.

As people are losing their old coping skills, they are often struggling to find new ways to cope and are getting overwhelmed. If you are feeling lethargic, sad, staring off into space, feeling consumed by feelings of darkness and anxiety, you may need to find new ways to cope and deal with your feelings.

All in the Family Counseling can help you identify feelings that you are struggling with, thoughts or beliefs that may be interfering with your ability to get help. One of the key mental health tools that we need to embrace right now is mental flexibility, adaptivity and understanding that even when we can’t have thing the way we want, there are alternatives. Many people struggle with the strong feelings of being able to think clearly and to be able to find the solutions that they need.
