A less stigmatising view of ADHD

Posted on July 14, 2018

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) is like an iceberg. The symptoms of ADHD such as impulsivity, hyper activeness, inability to pay attention, are but the tip of the iceberg.

The symptoms (tip of the iceberg) only represent 10 percent of the iceberg an individual with ADHD, and should not be generalized to other 90 percent of the iceberg, which is submerged under water.

The submerged portion of the ADHD iceberg contains traits and vulnerabilities that are often misunderstood by others. People with ADHD have a low self-esteem, thus, it's important for parents to brainstorm about ways to increase their children's self-confidence from young. They also have developmental delays, extreme emotions, inflexibility, co-morbid disorders such as depression, skills deficit, weaker executive functioning, time-blindness, meltdowns, school incopmpatibiliyy.
