Waiting Constructively

Posted on January 16, 2018

It's official: we're living in a fast-paced world. As actors on this world's stage, we might not feel it ourselves, but fact is we are always rushing from place to place, planning for and looking forward to the next upcoming event in our lives. So when our lives grind to a sudden halt due to unforeseen circumstances, we can feel at a loss of what next to do. There are, however, ways in which we can overcome these hurdles, and surprisingly, these are simple steps one can take, though they may be more challenging than they actually sound.

It is important to first get the right mindset to proceed. Getting back that motivation, that spark in your life, that fire in your belly, is a key starting point. One way to achieve this is to live in the moment, and to live for yourself, because then you distract yourself from the waiting process, and this makes things seem a lot better.

Next, share your experiences daily with people you trust, who will not only listen to what you have to say and nod their heads, but also those who will ask you to step out of your comfort zone and be there with you every step of the way. These may include your significant other or close family and friends. Make sure to think happy thoughts when you're by yourself; don't let your mind wander. Remember that you're not alone on this path called Life, and that there's always someone out there who is willing to lend a helping hand.

Waiting might take a long time, but this is all the more reason to try out new things you've always wanted to do but never had the time to. That could range from picking up a new sport to checking out that new place down the street with the fancy lights, even if it takes a long time, even if it doesn't, as long as you stick to what you said you would do, that's all that matters.

You might turn to social media in boredom during your excessive free time, but it could do you more harm than good, especially if you keep comparing you current lifestyle to peers whose lives are seemingly smoother at this point in time. The grass is always greener on the other side has never been more applicable here. Don't compare yourself with others, remember that things can only get better from here on out, that someday, you too can be in that position you were once so envious of.

Exercise can help as well, besides being a distraction; a healthy body begets a healthy mind after all. Simple and frequent exercise has many health benefits, such as reducing anxiety and improving your mood. The best thing? It can be as simple as doing a sport or going for a run. Whatever it is, the most important thing is to commit your time and effort to maintaining this lifestyle.

At the end of the day, these changes in lifestyle are often easier said than done, but we never know unless we try. Use your time while waiting wisely, and you might find it surprising the amount of things that you can accomplish.
