Animals have already been integrated into the medical world through the concept of pet therapy. They have also been used to help those with disabilities, such as service dogs for the blind or elderly. However, researchers in the UK have focused on the role that personal pets play for those with mental health conditions.

Having a pet as a companion will teach the owner various roles and set them up on a regularized schedule. Feeding and cleaning will build responsibility and standardized a routine. Specific pets such as dogs will help the owner engage in exercise through walks or runs. Additionally, having a close companion can teach the owner a lesson on acceptance. Bonds developed with pets can help people realize that they are needed and loved regardless of their personality or characteristics.
