A new study suggested that people greet each other by shaking hands, partly to smell each other cues.
It is indeed pretty interesting, how olfactory cues set up as as a social lubrication. The study found that people spend more than twice as long sniffing their hands after a handshake. Hand shaking is followed by the act of hand-sniffing in a secretive or inexpressive way. There are varying differences while meeting someone of the same gender as opposed to someone with the opposite gender.
