TREATING THE NARCISSIST: Perspectives from Schema Therapy and Psychoanalytic Self Psychology

Date: 13 Sep 2019

Singapore

This one day workshop will look at the psychoanalytic idea of self-structure and the distinctive deficits for the narcissist identified by Heinz Kohut in Self Psychology (SP). This formulation will be compared to the mode model in Schema Therapy (ST) with the self-aggrandizer mode. Ideas for treatment will be considered such as affective attunement in SP, re-parenting and chair-work in ST. The common ground in both therapeutic approaches is found in the idea of a corrective emotional experience. This is a workshop for experienced therapists and it is essential that participants bring a clinical case with narcissistic features (not necessarily meeting the full DSM-5 diagnosis) to discuss in small groups and to work on through the day.
