Children's emotional and behavioral problems are often a reflection of family dynamics. However, most child
psychological assessments focus only on t he child without considering the family context. When assessing the child in the family context, we have found t hat the outcomes can be very different. Children who have been diagnosed with a range of psychiatric problems can simply be too concerned about t heir families.
The Family Biofeedback Assessment was developed by Dr Wai-Yung Lee and her clinical team at the Asian Academy of Family Therapy to address this link. This innovative assessment and treatment approach does not just capture children's physiological responses, hence enabling parents to gain new understanding of their child’s physical and mental health conditions, it also helps elicit the children’s voices, which is an important way to activate the healing process for both parents and child. This approach has gained recognition internationally and Dr Lee was awarded “Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Theory and Practice Award” by the American Family Therapy Academy in 2014. In this presentation, the presenters will use video segments to introduce the protocol and share their experiences administering this assessment.
About the Presenters
Viviana CHENG, Psy.D., is Research Associate at Asian Academy of Family Therapy. She has been involved in the design and setting up of the Family Biofeedback Assessment at AAFT and has been a part of the AAFT research team for the past 10 years. She has been involved in major research projects at the Academy and co-authored important papers with Wai Yung Lee, Ph.D.
Elaine FONG, M.Soc.Sc., is Assistant Clinical Director and Family Therapist at Asian Academy of Family Therapy. She has been working in the field of marriage and family therapy for the past 8 years and has been involved in core projects at AAFT, with a specific focus on divorce and children and adolescent issues.
