Working with Emotion in Emotion-Focused Therapy

Date: 14 Apr 2018

Singapore

Working actively with emotion has been empirically shown to be of central importance in psychotherapy yet there are differences in how different approaches conceptualise and work with emotion.

AEDP [Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy] highlights the idea that deep, viscerally felt affective experiences have the inherent capacity to transform people. CBT therapists are beginning to understand the interrelatedness of emotion, thought, and behaviour and are emphasising this notion of corrective emotional experience in their work with clients (Alexander & French, 1946; Pachankis & Goldfried, 2007).

EFT sees emotion as a vehicle for therapeutic change and has incorporated Gestalt’s experiential techniques to help clients access and make contact with “hidden” or primary emotions. EFT differentiates emotion into Primary Emotion, Secondary Emotion and Instrumental Emotion, so as to be more precise in targeting the important emotions. Emotion-focused therapists view emotion as our primary meaning system and as such emotion is used as the path to greater awareness of what is important in any given situation. Emotion-focused therapy help clients make sense of their feelings as well as transforming their core painful emotions.

Seminar Outline

This seminar compares and contrasts various theories of emotion and how these shape their respective approaches to therapy.

This is done through, first, watching segments of the video [Emotion in Psychotherapy Series – Working with Emotion in Emotion-Focused Therapy, published by the American Psychological Association, 2017]. In this video, Prof. Leslie Greenberg, the primary originator of emotion-focused therapy, discusses how it works with emotion, and guest experts ask questions as they watch clips from previously published APA therapy videos.

This is followed by a discussion facilitated by Neo Eng Chuan and Huang ZhangJin, both of whom are experienced EFT practitioners. They will illuminate important concepts related to emotions such as Client Emotional Productivity and Vocal Quality Scale.
