A mindfulness-based training workshop for professionals working with adolescents

The Taming the Adolescent Mind© program has proven to be effective with adolescents. Learning and applying techniques of R.O.A.M (regulate attention; observing attention; acceptance; meaningful and mindful living), with structured exercises and demonstrations with the goal of achieving mindfulness skills.

Participants at the completion of this one-day workshop will be introduced to:

• mindfulness-based therapies
• empirical evidence on efficacy of mindfulness-based therapies in children and adolescents
• mindfulness measurements for children and adolescents
• step-by-step guide on how lead a mindfulness-based adolescent group intervention

Dr Lucy Tan is the author and program developer of TAM, a mindfulness program developed specifically for adolescents. Rigorous research has established the efficacy of Mindfulness-based interventions for adults in both physical and mental domains. However, little was done for children and adolescents. Against this backdrop, Dr Tan has researched, developed and tested the adolescent program. Hence, extending mindfulness to this special population.

TAM workbook and manual has now been translated into Chinese, and is also used in Australia’s health-care system. It is often said that the best researchers are those who were frustrated as clinicians, hence empowering and informing their undertakings. It is no surprise that Dr Tan has received several awards since the publications of her research (e.g., The Australia Prime Minister Endeavour Asia Award and International Conference on Mindfulness in Society, Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice, UK).

Participants at the training will gain an understanding of both the theoretical underpinnings and be engaged in interactive learning experience. Eligibility: include psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and counsellors (must have a minimum of a 3-4 year tertiary qualification)
