Date: 3 Feb 2021 - 4 Feb 2021

Online

Presented by Dr Raymond Chip Tafrate, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Central Connecticut State University.

Across a broad range of treatment settings, being able to successfully harness clients’ own motivations for making important life changes is a key ingredient for success. In this training course, you will become familiar with the basic theory of motivational interviewing, practice ways of responding effectively to challenging client statements, and develop skills for fostering an effective therapeutic alliance at the very first meeting. Emphasis will be placed on fine-tuning your ability to recognize, evoke, and respond to client “change language,” an essential skill for fostering awareness and motivation throughout the treatment process. Stylistic and sequential strategies for integrating motivational interviewing with CBT will also covered.

Join CBT Australia and international author, Raymond Chip Tafrate, Ph.D., for fast-paced, interactive, virtual learning sessions that will provide you with the foundational knowledge and tools to engage challenging cases. The most efficient way to develop new skills is through practice -- learning by doing. Therefore, this workshop highly interactive, incorporating structured learning activities including case examples, audio/video-recorded work samples, small group exercises, and “real”-plays. Class sizes are limited to allow for practice opportunities in a virtual learning environment. The goal is for you to be able to transfer and incorporate newly learned knowledge and skills into your real-world interactions.

The materials covered are applicable to a range of professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses, graduate students, case managers, probation/parole officers, and other professionals working with clients in private practice, outpatient mental health centers, hospitals, day reporting centers, halfway and transitional housing programs, prisons, and probation/parole systems.

Engaging Challenging Cases: Integrating Motivational Interviewing with CBT

Across a broad range of treatment settings, being able to successfully harness clients’ own motivations for making important life changes is a key ingredient for success. However, some client groups are more challenging because the subjective distress and awareness that often motivates behavior change may be lacking (e.g., destructive patterns may be viewed as harmless, enjoyable, and worth continuing). Since few people react well to being pressured into getting help, it’s not surprising that in some circumstances, clients present with a lack of interest in making changes, if not outright hostility toward intervention programs and practitioners. In the most difficult scenarios, a worthwhile goal is often to create an atmosphere where clients who say they are “forced to be here” become willing to look at themselves and are eventually able to say that they “want to make changes anyway.” In this workshop, you will be progressively guided to improve your skills for engaging challenging cases from basic to more advanced levels.
