What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

MI is one of the most researched and evidence based approaches to strengthening the client's motivation and commitment to change. It is a person-centered counselling framework for reducing the common experience of ambivalence about change by strategically applying the language of change. As a nonjudgmental and non-confrontational approach, MI has many applications including mental health, substance misuse, problem gambling, management of chronic physical illnesses and forensic rehabilitation. It invites the client to explore and evaluate their own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance, respect, and compassion. MI has also been applied in group settings.
