Recent challenges to long-standing beliefs about Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have led to a closer scrutiny of its screening, assessment and diagnosis (e.g., Siegel, 2018, “The Politics of Autism”). This talk will focus on the professional’s role in screening, evaluating and diagnosing ASD. Participants will learn the following:
- ASD diagnostic criteria
- Approaches to screen for ASD
- The characteristics of the “gold standard” ASD assessment
- Appropriate recommendations when ASD is diagnosed
This talk provides valuable and useful information for psychologists, counsellors, learning support teachers and psychiatrists as well as those in training for these professions.
Andrew Adler, Ph.D. is the director of the Adler Family Centre in Hong Kong. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Yale University, is a licensed psychologist in New York State (US) and has specialised in treating and evaluating a wide range of psychological difficulties for over 20 years. Dr. Adler also conducts assessments that evaluate children’s psychological, educational and developmental functioning. One of his areas of specialty is conducting assessments to determine the presence and nature of Autistic Spectrum Disorder.0-
